A Wedding Fit for Royalty at the Carton House

Historic Country House in Maynooth

Few locations around Ireland offer such lavish weddings as the historic Carton House.

A short drive from Dublin, the grounds of the 1,100-acre fully walled estate stretch over both County Kildare and County Meath. While the land has been in the FitzGerald family since 1176, the house itself dates back to 1739, when Earl FitzGerald commissioned the famous architect Richard Castles to build Carton House. Since then, it’s hosted a number of famous guests, including Queen Victoria, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Marianne Faithfull; it’s quite literally a wedding venue fit for royalty!

    Timeless elegance

To say the house and grounds are stunning is an understatement. Walking through the house is like taking a step back in time. Once a home for the Irish aristocracy, this Palladian mansion oozes opulence and luxury in a warm, welcoming environment. It’s also been updated with modern conveniences, creating the perfect blend of old and new. From the architecture to the perfectly restored décor and rich, decadent colours throughout, Carton House provides an idyllic setting for those looking for a romantic, fairy-tale wedding.

    Tying the knot

Ceremonies can be held in the Princess Grace Suite or the Lady Granville Suite, both of which have a private lounge and decking area that overlook the estate. There’s also the recently renovated Carton Suite ballroom, which offers a private pre-drinks area and an outdoor terrace. Of course, ceremonies can be set up in the perfectly maintained gardens. I love how glamourous it feels to walk down the private, walled garden entrance to the just-opened FitzGerald Suite.

The lovely Carton House team can help get you sorted based on the overall style of your wedding and the size of your guest list. The Carton House offers onsite catering for ceremonies of up to 300 people with a civil ceremony fee of €850. Reception packages begin at €225 per person for Fridays and Saturdays and include gourmet offerings like their John Stone centre cut fillet steak.

    Activities and accommodation

One of the many perks of a Carton House wedding comes in the form of on-site activities to keep you and your guests entertained. First, there’s the Carton House Spa, a selling point in and of itself. But there’s also the wellness centre, complete with an 18-meter swimming pool, two championship golf courses, tennis courts, fishing, and falconry on the resort. Stroll along the many walking paths that wind along the River Rye and ancient woodlands. After all the excitement of the wedding festivities and the on-site activities, guests can sleep in one of the 169 luxuriously cozy bedrooms—18 of which are found in the house itself.

    Before and after

The night before your big day, the team at Carton House can arrange for a barbecue on one of the private terraces or a more intimate private rehearsal dinner in The Duke’s Study, The Tyrconnell, or the aptly named Gold Salon.

The day after, soak up every last minute with your friends and family with brunch in the house, afternoon tea, or any of the private dinner or BBQ options. Minimum numbers apply, so be sure to check with the team for more information.

Carton House is a wedding venue that offers the perfect blend of luxury, history, and natural beauty.
