A Simple Guide

Explore the formats

Film is a core part of how I photograph a wedding day.

Each format brings a different feeling to your day

I’ve been photographing weddings since 2012, with a background in design and a deep connection to film through my family. This guide will help you understand how the different film formats feel, and what might suit your day best.

35mm Film

Movement, atmosphere, and in-between moments

35mm is woven throughout the day in a selective and intentional way. It’s best suited to movement, candid moments, and a more documentary feel, often with flash as the light begins to fall. It allows me to work quickly and instinctively, capturing energy as it happens rather than directing it.

A small amount of film is included across all my collections, with the option to expand coverage.

Medium Format

Refined, timeless, and quietly elevated

Medium format is included as part of my expanded film coverage option, alongside additional 35mm, and is what creates that softer, more refined film aesthetic.

It’s slower and more considered, used for portraits and moments where we can create something very intentional. This is where the imagery takes on a quietly luxurious feel.

Black & White

Depth, emotion, and simplicity

Black and white is something I love to work with. It has a way of distilling a moment down to what really matters, removing distraction and allowing emotion to come through more clearly.

It works beautifully across both portraits and documentary moments, bringing a sense of depth and emotion that feels timeless. It’s helpful to know how you feel about it in advance, particularly if black and white film is used, as those frames cannot be converted back to colour.

Experimental

Unplanned, instinctive, and one of a kind

Occasionally, I create more experimental frames using light, movement, or the natural imperfections of film. These might include light leaks, double exposures, haze, or flare.

They are not guaranteed and tend to happen in the moment, but they often become some of the most unique images from a day. If you’re drawn to this, I can incorporate more of it into your day. If not, my focus stays on the moments that matter most to you.

Choosing what feels right for you

Every couple connects with film differently, whether that’s the movement and energy of 35mm, or the softer, more refined feel of expanded medium format film coverage. Most couples choose to include additional film throughout the day, creating a more layered, timeless gallery.

If you’re unsure, I’ll guide you towards what feels right for your day. The format matters less than the feeling it creates. That’s what we’ll shape together.
