Loughcrew Estate: Countryside Boho

Bohemian Wedding Venue in Co. Meath

Calling all bohemian brides: this is the venue for you!

A Greek revival house with a Parisian-style courtyard, the picturesque Loughcrew House is only about an hour’s drive from Dublin in Co. Meath. With its Pinterest-worthy décor and acres of gorgeous grounds, it’s hard not to fall in love with Loughcrew Estate, but read on if you need just a tad more convincing.

    So. Much. History.

Loughcrew House has a storied history that begins in the 17th century. Despite three fires, Cromwellian disposition, and five centuries gone by, it stands, as beautiful as ever. Its well-documented history has also shown a motte, bailey, and ring fort on the estate, while Neolithic cairns are tucked into the surrounding countryside. It was also Oliver Plunkett’s homeplace. I mean. It doesn’t get any cooler than that.

    Ceremony locations

Speaking of Plunkett, the remains of St. Oliver Plunkett’s church create a magical ceremony setting on their own. There’s no need for much décor, if any. The lime tree avenue leading up to the old church is another fab (and fragrant!) place to exchange your vows, as is the Palm House; adding a touch of candles only enhances the natural warmth of the room, with its original plasterwork and gorgeous plants complementing the balcony, where a live musician can perform for your ceremony.

    Photography locations

As if the ceremony locations weren’t enough, each eclectic room throughout the house provides a stunning backdrop for wedding photos, as does just about any spot throughout the grounds. The ruined portico, which was once the entrance to the original house is now a piece of history that overlooks the estate, resembling a mini-Acropolis. Then there’s the sea of colour created by the wildflower meadow, the row of ancient yews, or the glistening lake—you can’t go wrong!

    Super customisable

Venue hire at Loughcrew Estate doesn’t come with inflexible packages; instead, the experienced team can provide a list of suppliers for everything from catering to live music options, and the rest is up to you to tailor to your liking. But not without help.

The house is artistically designed by the Naper family, who have owned the house since 1655. They’ve centuries of experience decorating this home and will help you design your dream wedding.

    Food for thought

After the drinks reception in the original stables-turned-Plunkett’s Bar, the Parisian Piazza-esque courtyard (complete with firepit), the elegant Sitting Room of the main house, or the brilliantly maintained gardens, it’s time for the meal. Dine under the exposed wooden beams and chandeliers of the Banqueting Rooms, which can accommodate 20-140 guests. If the weather allows, the barbecue terrace is a gorgeous little suntrap for al fresco dining, while the marquee is perfect for parties greater than 140.
