Can you get legally married in Morocco?

For non-nationals, planning to get married in Morocco can be super easy or a tedious process depending on where you are from. I advise hiring a local wedding planner or legal expert familiar with Moroccan marriage laws to assist with navigating all the  formalities.

Important facts to note

Consider getting legally married at home before celebrating in Morocco. A symbolic / non-legal ceremony won’t require any paperwork!

A certificate of legal capacity to marry is essential, regardless of nationality. You can get this by arranging an appointment with your embassy or a consulate in Morocco. Once approved by your embassy, it must be approved by the local Moroccan authorities. It can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few months to process so don’t leave it to the last minute. Once approved it will be valid for three months.

All your documents will need to be copied three times, stamped, signed, and translated: Birth certificates, Residence certificates, Divorce & Death Certificates (If necessary), Passport and passport-sized photos, Police records and Medical certificates. Other documents may also be necessary such as payslips and employment letters depending on your nationality.

Same-sex marriage is not legally recognized in Morocco. I would advise same-sex couples to plan their destination wedding in another country.

When is the best time to get married in Morocco?

May to Early September

Late spring to early autumn is the warm season and the perfect time to tie the knot in Morocco.

Morocco basks in sunshine, with clear skies and hot daily temperatures of around 30°C. This is the perfect time for a lovely outdoor wedding if you love the sunshine and warm temperatures.

October to early March

From late October to early March, Morocco transforms into a tranquil haven, with crisp air and temperatures around 20°C.

This is a better time to plan your wedding if you prefer cooler weather. I recommend getting an indoor venue at this time of year as it also gets a lot of rain.
